Throughout our spring semester in Writing for a Publication, we have all learned to become better writers. We wrote opinion pieces, magazine articles, and even personal narrative stories. Our goal in writing most of these stories was also to attempt to get some of them published. One of my favorite sports writers is Dejan Kovacevic from the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. I really wanted to send him some of my stories this year and not only try to get it published, but also to get some advice from a columnist who I admire and look up to. I felt like he was the right person to send my fighting in hockey piece to because he knows a lot about the game from a journalist standpoint and could definitely help me make the piece stronger. For my fighting in hockey story, I did a lot of research into the debate of whether it should or should not be allowed in the sport. I took the side of being mostly against it due to the fatal mental issues some players have faced, but I also go point of views from people around the game who think it's good in ways for the sport. I talked to a member of Cal U's mens hockey team and a coach of the women's hockey team who both think fighting has a purpose in the game of hockey. I really wanted to get both sides of opinions on the topic because I understand it's a very talked about topic. Though I think more towards the personal side of things, I understand that many of my readers would think it is an exciting part of the game that should never be changed.
When it comes to being a college journalist, I have learned that it is indeed a scary thing to try to break out into the world of journalism. You're not sure what to expect and what input you're going to get, but I'm learning that it all has a purpose. My dream is to work as a sports columnist because I'm passionate about different kinds of sports and always have different opinions on important topics. There is always that fear that you're going to be criticized by someone, but that just comes with the job. I believe that no matter what you do in this field of work, the risk and the challenges that come with it are more than worth the reward.
